Smokey + Hayley

How did Smokey come into your world?

Smokey came into my life on the 6th of August 2008 and has never left my side since.
I'd had Kelpie's in my family growing up and fell in love with the breed, so when I had the chance to get my own, I couldn't resist. She was hand reared, and I needed a special soul; the moment we locked eyes on each other I knew it was meant to be. We learnt a lot from each other and formed an unbreakable bond, I couldn't imagine life without her.

How would you describe her personality?

Smokey has so much love and affection, for humans, chickens, cats, sheep, wombats and even turtles! She is extremely curious and adventurous but in her golden years has taken more focus on stalking her cat friend (or whoever else I might be hand-rearing) and enjoying a nice nap during the day. My gorgeous little girl is a happy, intelligent, kind, gentle dog with a heart of gold. She is incredibly food orientated, if you're in the kitchen or eating its guaranteed that she will be close by, just in case something is dropped!

If she could tell us all something about you, what would she say?

I'd hope it's nice things! Daddy gives in to my puppy eyes, sneaks me lots of treats when mum isn't watching, and he gives me the best "rubbles" Mummy gives me the best belly rubs, but she would also ask "why do you have to go to work?"

What does she love to do the most?

Smokey loves morning "rubbles" at 5am, then it's cat and chicken watching time! She is a big fan of the river and the beach, quite happy to sit on the beach or get in and be a water rat! Upside down cuddles with mum on the reclining chair is the best thing. And if you are brave enough to stop you will get a cheeky little bark or a paw smack on the nose! Car rides are pretty amazing too, especially if she is lucky enough to get a chicken nugget!

What's everyday life like with your girl by your side?

Constant smiles and laughter, she gives me so much. I couldn't ask for a better companion, she is my best friend, constant shadow, never upset or disappointed with me, always happy to see me and loves me unconditionally. She follows me everywhere, even to the toilet! We love our daily walks, now that she's older we enjoy a cart ride, watching the sunset and boy does she come do life and get a little run going when the cat is around, or someone opens the treat container!

"Dog" is such as small word to take up so much room In my heart.

How has having Smokey changed your life?

Smokey is my best friend, she's been there through all life's ups and downs in the past 14.5 years. She has brought me so much joy and happiness, I wish she could be with me forever. A home is just a house without a dog. The relationship I have formed with her is something so special, she knows me so well.
She makes me happy when the skies are grey.

Smokey was diagnosed with Cauda Equina syndrome 2 weeks ago, a spinal disease where compression of the spinal cord occurs. It has been an anxious and expensive time, but I would do it all again if it meant we got to spend more time with each other.
Sadly, I know our time will be cut short soon and saying goodbye to my soul mate is going to break my heart into a million pieces.

A special thankyou to Dani for fitting us in at short notice, as bitter-sweet as these photos were to have taken, I know they will provide me with some level of comfort knowing the memory of our happy times is always mine to keep.
Treasure every moment you have with your pets as you never know when their time will be up.
